In the 1950's, a group of real estate developers amassed over 12,000 acres in Fayette County to build a planned community. Peachtree City was chartered March 9, 1959. The city was planned to be developed into villages, each with its own shopping areas, recreational facilities, and elementary schools. Today there are now 4 Villages. Peachtree City’s current villages are Aberdeen, Braelinn, Glenloch, and Kedron. One more village may become official soon. It is "West Village" consiting of the neighborhoods West of GA 74.
In the original plan, Peachtree City was expected to have between 75,000 and 80,000 residents. In the mid 1970s, the Land Use Plan was revised to allow for between 40,000 and 50,000 residents.

Although Peachtree City has grown steadily since it's inception, the reduction in the number of homes built in comparison to the number of homes allowed in new developments will result in a further reduction in the final population, which will only reach approximately 36,000 residents with the current City limits.
West Village includes about 1200 acres of land under consideration to become part of Peachtree City. The development of this area would expand the neighborhood known as Centennial by John Weiland, and add approximately 4,000 more residents to Peachtree City, bringing the final population to approximately 40,000.
